Descendents of Tang Yao and Liu Lei. Before the
Zhou Dynasty, Fan and Du
had common
ancestors, known as Tangdu, who resided in south east of Xian in Shaanxi. During
Zhou Xuan Wangs reign, Do Bo was killed and his son
fled to Jin kingdom and became a judge.
He changed his name to Shi (meaning judge). His great grandson Shi Hui, was the
Commander in Chief. To reward him for his contributions in defeating the neighboring
tribes, he was awarded the duke of Sui (Jiaxiu in Shanxi) and duke of Fan (south east
of Fan in Henan). Thus he was also known as Sui Hui, or Fan Hui. His descendents assumed
one of the following last names, Fan, Sui, or Shi. Among them Fan is the biggest clan.
Huis son took Fan as his last name, and was known as Fan Quan or Fan Ziwen. He established
the civil system for the Jin kingdom, and made Jin the earliest kingdom during
Chun Qiu to
adopt the civil system. Later, the Fans lost in a power struggle and were driven out of Jin
by the Zhaos, Xuns, and Hans.
