The Xiang last name came from the surname Ji. It is a last name which originated from the name of a kingdom. During the Zhou Dynasty, there was a Xiang Kingdom (City of Xiang in Henan), which was awarded to the Ji family. In 647 BC, the Chu Empire annihilated the Xiang Kingdom, and its people assumed the last name of Xiang to commemorated their lost kingdom.
