His descendents used his first name as their last name to commemorate him. During the Shang Dynasty, a member of the Li family was awarded duke of Li (south west of Zhangzhi in Shanxi). The Li kingdom was brought to an end by the Zhou Dynasty, and Zhou Wu Wang awarded the territory of the Li kingdom to the descendents of Shang Tang. During Chun Qiu period, the Li kingdom was moved to Li Cheng of Shanxi. After the Li kingdom was eliminated by the Jin kingdom, its people began to bear the last name of Li.
