The 4th most common last name in China. There are three sources of Liu, 1) during Yao Dis reign, the descendents of Tao Tang was awarded the land of Liu (in He Nan). During the Xia Dynasty, Liu Lei was given the title of Dragon Keeper, by Emperor Kung Jia (1,879 1,848 B.C.). Liu was given four dragons to take care, but one died. Liu was afraid to report the death of the dragon but cooked the dragon and served to the Emperor as soup. When the Emperor wanted to see the dragons, Liu showed him two dragons at a time, and soon the Emperor became suspicious. Liu escaped to Lu Shan of He Nan where the Liu family settled, 2) came from the last name of Ji. During Chun Qiu, Zhou Kuang Wang awarded the city of Liu to his youngest son, Wang Ji, and his descendents have the name Liu, 3) given names- during Han Dynasty, Lous and Hans were given the name Liu; one of the kings of Han married a daughter to the Hungarian Prince and their descendents have the name Liu; during the Nanbei Dynasty one of the Hungarian tribes known as Du Gu changed their name to Liu.
