There are two main origins to this last name, one from northern China, and the other from the south. 1) Northern origin- During the Xia Dynasty, the Kunwus were awarded the land of Gu (south east of Fan in Henan). The Gu kingdom was a close ally to the Xia Dynasty. When the Shang Dynasty replaced the Xia Dynasty, the Gu kingdom was also eliminated, and its people began to bear the last name Gu. 2) Southern origin- During Chun Qiu, the 8th generation of Yue Wang Ju Jian, was awarded duke of Gu, known as Gu Yu Hou. His descendents resided in the vicinity of Huiji and are known as Gu also. (Gu means attend to, look after).
